Provision

Maninplace has acquired over twenty-three properties, offering nearly 120 units of accommodation for those presenting as non-statutory homeless.

Working alongside voluntary sector organisations such as KiP, Stay, Wellington YMCA, and others, Maninplace is assisting those who have difficulty accessing appropriate private sector rental accommodation and other support services that may be required.  Access to such provision can often be difficult because many homeless people do not fit defined service criteria or their past trauma may impact lifestyle and behaviour choices, leading to issues that affect their tenancy and relationships.

Many of those who present as homeless experience addictions to alcohol and/or adrugs, they may also suffer from ill mental health and have poor physical health that becomes exasperated by their homelessness. Dual diagnosis of the above is commonplace within the homeless community and will require more intense levels of support to take positive steps forward in recovery and long-term management of a home.

For some, the experience of homelessness is not a new one, many have been without accommodation for a number of years. They will have felt marginalised and stigmatised by society and support services. and will have an overfall feeling of being let down by many around them.

The experience of homelessness affects individuals in different ways; many survive by excessive alcohol consumption, others by criminal activities, drug addiction and most will experience declining health.

Many are dependent on welfare support for their source of income, often unable to work due to the impact their homelessness has on them. They have been used to surviving by living in cars, sheds, tents, and hedge rows, many smoke, drink alcohol excessively and eat scraps, instant food that lacks proper protein and falls short of a balanced nutritious diet. Survival, often being their paramount challenge each day, obscures other important requirements made upon them. This can have long term health implications.

Having established the need, Maninplace has placed itself in “the gap” to provide accessible emergency and temporary accommodation to assist people who are living chaotic lifestyles on the streets.

Parallel to the accommodation, Maninplace offers its service users floating and accommodation based support through the “Thrive” partnership, as well as mental health outreach support for those who are homeless or facing homelessness via our WASS Project.
